Mangosteen is a popular tropical fruit commonly eaten fresh, canned, jam, juices, jellies, sorbets or dried. The mangosteen is an abundant source of polyphenols, particularly xanthones. More than 60 different xanthones have been isolated from its pericarp, bark and roots. Among the xanthones, α-mangostin is the most abundant and one of the most studied because of its potential therapeutic properties.
